MINI Rocketman Concept Returns for Summer Olympics

Recently as last January, we heard that the MINI Rocketman concept had been shelved, but a press release from the company is suggesting otherwise.

Last seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, MINI’s patriotic lightweight concept car is sure never to find birth on the production line, but the marque will manifest it again in a tribute to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Built on the same carbon fiber and plastic spaceframe that brought criticism during its last debut, the Rocketman concept features a 3+1 seating configuration and super-short wheelbase as before.

British-themed livery characterizes the car’s exterior, with a Union Jack on the glass roof and a red white and blue paint. Inside, exposed carbon fiber pieces give a modern appearance while the Olympic theme is prominently displayed.

That display comes into play inside the car. The storage area on the center console between the driver and passenger has miniatures arranged to be playing basketball while the British color scheme seen on the outside continues through the cabin.

Little more than a tribute to the upcoming Summer Olympics, you probably shouldn’t expect much more about the Rocketman concept after this summer considering there isn’t any practical application for a car like this. Still, there are some stunning examples of radical design in our gallery below.
